FIRE SAFETY
All student residences are equipped with an automatic fire alarm system. If the alarm sounds, you must evacuate the residence. Fire safety is our shared responsibility!
On this page you will find information related to fire safety and also instructions for emergency situations.
HOW TO PREVENT AN EMERGENCY?
The main cause of emergencies in our buildings is burnt food!
You should never leave food unattended while cooking. Even if you are using an air fryer or oven, you should stay in the kitchen. If a dangerous situation arises, you can react quickly and prevent a fire.
Don’t let your snack turn into an emergency for the whole building!
Overloaded extension cords and exploding devices
- Unplug chargers when you are finished charging!
- Do not charge devices on the blanket or under the pillow!
- Turn off devices when you leave the building! Christmas lights catch fire too!
- DO NOT plug one extension cord into another!
- An extension cord is a temporary solution, plug devices straight into the wall socket!
Using open fire is forbidden!
Bruning candles or incence or using another kind of open flame is forbidden. As an alternative, you can use battery operated candles and scented difusers.
A curtain will catch fire from a candle in seconds and it will take less than a minute for the situation to become life threatening.
Smoking only in designated areas!
Smoking is strictly prohibited indoors. This prohibition also applies to e-cigarettes.
Instructions for tenants in emergency situations
- Learn the evacuation routes of your residential hall
Get acquainted with all the information regarding fire safety and evacuation routes in your building.
- Immediate evacuation
Do not stand around during evacuation. Stop cooking, turn off the stove, close your window, and evacuate. Do not lock doors because the rescue team needs access to all the rooms in the emergency area to make sure there are no casualties. Always use the nearest and safest route to evacuate and make sure it is clear of smoke.
- Wear warm clothes
Sometimes you have to wait outside for a while during a fire, so make sure you bring warm clothes with you so you would not freeze.
- DO NOT enter a room full of smoke
Do not enter a room or a hallway if you see smoke in there because this will endanger your life. Moreover, if you open the door to a room full of smoke, the incoming oxygen will fuel the fire. Smoke will also leak to rooms which were previously clear of it, therefore you will endanger everyone in the area.
- If trapped inside, try to draw the attention of others
If you are unable to leave your room or flat because of smoke and/or fire, plug the door with a wet cloth or wet toilet paper. Then try to draw the attention of the people outside or call the building personnel.
- Follow the instructions of the rescue team, security officers, or the building personnel
You may return to the building once the rescue team has declared it safe. If you arrive to the building while the alarm bells are ringing and residents are evacuating, wait outside. Do not enter the building.
